Pick of the month

Notorious (1946, Alfred Hitchcock)

This is one of the best Hitchcock movies we've seen. It became our favourite Hollywood production from Hitchcock, even surpassing Rear Window. Mainly because the female character is so fucking awesome. It has everything that one would expect from a Hitchcock film - edge-of-your-seat suspense, thrilling crime and mystery, great chemistry between the lead actors and of course, some good old-fashioned sexism (you really can't have a Hitchcock film without that one). It's shot superbly, every frame knows what its doing, the lighting is great and both characters have meaningful character arcs. This is a great example of the phenomenon where an older film has a much more complex, interesting and thusly more independent female character than a lot of modern cinema's women. And it's from Hitchcock, the arch-sexist, for crying out loud!  Also, this  movie completely convinced us that Cary Grant can do so much more than just comedy. We thoroughly recommend this for anyone who loves cinema and appreciates good film-making.
